Bob Goodman shares his wonderful advice about breaking into writing for television. He talks about breaking in as a writers assistance, production assistant (PA), script coordinator, or any way you can get a foot into the industry, as jobs often go to those on the inside.
Another way Bob says to go about it is to work on your spec scripts and submit to the many fellowships out there. A lot of them have a diversity focus, so work that angle if you can.
But mostly, move to LA, network with everyone you can, and write, write, write. You have to build a portfolio of resume samples.
A quick podcast-bomb: Bob said that a great podcast for all the steps involved in getting into writing for TV is the “Children of Tendu.”
So check out the podcast for more details on the points above and more great advice from the writer of such awesome titles as Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Superman: Unbound, and Elementary.
